Rory McIlroy leads a strong group of PGA Tour players as they begin preparation for the PGA Championship at the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship. The event kicks off Thursday at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, which is filling up as regular host Quail Hollow prepares for the Presidents Cup McIlroy has won the event three times, but not on this course, which was last a PGA Tour event in 2018 took place. Still, the Northern Irishman is listed at 7-1 in the latest 2022 Wells Fargo Championship odds by Caesars Sportsbook. No player has won consecutive Well Fargo titles, but McIlroy shot 64 in his final round, setting a Sunday Masters record to finish second. Corey Conners (20-1), Tony Finau (22-1) and Matt Fitzpatrick (22-1) are among the other favorites for the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship champion.
Should you be expecting big things from McIlroy this week and paying the price to have him anchor your Wells Fargo Fantasy 2022 picks? Gates is a staff writer for 247Sports and has been covering a range of sports for almost five years. He has been following golf for a long time and has an in-depth knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the pitch and in fantasy sports.
He claimed the winner at last week’s Mexican Open, backing Jon Rahm as his first choice despite the Spaniard’s recent crisis. The fantasy expert knew the ‘softer ground’ would benefit the former world No. 1 and let his talent shine.
The result? The 27-year-old led from wire to wire, eventually sealing the deal for his first win since winning the US Open almost a year ago. Rahm had at least a share of the lead on seven other occasions before the final lap in that span. I finished it on Sunday and everyone who followed Gate’s advice benefited.
The expert has been on the road to success all season. At the Masters, eight of his 20 picks ended up in the top eight, including winner Scottie Scheffler and runner-up McIlroy. In fact, the top four players in the final standings were among his favorites.
At Valspar’s championship, seven of his picks finished in the top 12, and he was in the money in Phoenix, where his five top picks all finished in the top 10. He also hit his picks in the sentry with four of his top seven picks in the top five, and he repeated that in the Hero World Challenge. Anyone who followed Gates is on top.
Now Gates has ranked his top golfers for the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship, and you’ll really want to see what he has to say. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Wells Fargo championship picks on SportsLine.
Expert tip for the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship
Gates isn’t afraid to come to terms with this week and firmly supports McIlroy. The 32-year-old dominated this event, finishing in the top 10 eight times in 10 appearances, including all three wins. He also has a lot more confidence than before ending an 18-month winning streak with last year’s win. McIlroy won the CJ Cup in October at 25 under par and since then has had seven top 20 finishes in his nine world events. His length at the start – last season he was second in driving distance – should give him a clear advantage.
On the other hand, Gates hides Ancer, who is among the favorites but not in the expert’s top 15. The 31-year-old was a Wells Fargo runner-up last year and shares Avenel’s course record (62 in 2018). However, Francesco Molinari achieved that in the final round of the 2018 Quicken Loans National, while Ancer shot 72 and finished fourth, 10 shots back. Ancer was not in top form and is 133rd on the circuit in scoring average (71.4). He reached the quarterfinals in match play, but his last top 10 in stroke play came back in November.
